- Description
- Ukraine is not one of the better-known countries in the English-speaking world. However, it is an important country, especially in the light of the current geopolitical climate, and it is important for students to become more aware of it and learn about it. One way of doing this is through educational games; in this paper I will look at some educational history and geography games published over the last few decades to see whether they mention Ukraine and what they teach about it. Both traditionally printed games and printable games available on the internet will be discussed. However, online games will not be considered, nor will puzzles of various sorts (which are sometimes called games). Some games, e.g. Guess in 10: Cities around the World (Skillmatics), do not mention Ukraine at all. There are other games in which Ukraine comes up, e.g. Geodice (Geotoys), but in which there is not much about it and/or in which some of the information involved is superficial (e.g. that it is one of the world’s countries which start with the letter U). However, there are at least a few games which have more substantial content on Ukraine. Recommendations will be made about how to include more information about Ukraine in educational games and what sort of information to include.
